The Butterfly Popup Card is a great example of using two V-fold arches to create a dramatic popup mechanism. It is a simple 5 to 6 pieces mechanism that slips into a folder. Fold on the dotted lines before assembling as labeled.
The following is a diagram explanation of the slot and glue on the back for assembling of the
pieces.
Step 1 (optional)
The Butterfly Popup Card is unique because it has the second arch cut in half
with half the butterfly cut out. This provides a center flying butterfly popup. The two slots are slid together to form
the arch.
Step 2 – The
two V-folds slide together forming a diamond shape opening.
Step 3 – Two front legs are slid into
the smaller Arch.
Step 4 –
Either glue the back tab into position on the base or slide into the base slot and glue from behind.
Step 5 – Either
glue the front
tab into position
on the base or slide into the base
slot and glue from behind.
Gluing the tabs on top makes the front cover have an open design.
Step 6 – The
open design will need additional layer of white or colored paper to cover the
cutout. To attach the popup to the cover, use
adhesive or glue alone the
edge of the cover. Insert into the cover while closed so it will open and close
nicely.
